Winter maintenance across County Antrim
County Antrim runs from Belfast and Lisburn on the M1 and M2 up through Antrim, Ballymena and Larne to the Causeway Coast. Coastal towns along Belfast Lough and the Antrim coast see fewer hard frosts, while sites inland around Ballymena and the Antrim Plateau freeze far more often, so we set triggers site by site rather than county-wide.
Gritting in Belfast
From city-centre offices and the Harbour estate to retail parks along the M1, M2 and Westlink, Belfast has more commercial car parks than anywhere else in Northern Ireland. The city's coastal position keeps many winter nights just above freezing, which is exactly when shaded car parks, multi-storey ramps and north-facing footpaths catch people out.
Gritting in Lisburn
Lisburn's retail parks around Sprucefield, its business parks and the industrial estates along the M1 make it one of the busiest areas we cover. Sites on higher ground to the north and west of the city can freeze on nights when central Belfast stays clear.
Gritting in Newtownabbey
Mallusk, Global Point and the industrial estates along the M2 and M5 run shifts through the night, so yards, gatehouses and loading bays need to be treated before the early shift, not after it. The ground rising towards Carnmoney Hill and Cave Hill is noticeably colder than the lough shore.
Gritting in Carrickfergus
Carrickfergus sits on the shore of Belfast Lough, where sea air usually takes the edge off a frost. Business, school and retail sites on the higher ground behind the town can be several degrees colder than the seafront, so they are forecast separately.
Gritting in Antrim
With Belfast International Airport nearby, the M2 and M22, and a cluster of business and industrial parks, Antrim depends on safe early-morning access. Sites close to Lough Neagh often get freezing fog that leaves surfaces icy well into the morning.
Gritting in Ballymena
Ballymena's town-centre retail, industrial estates and manufacturing and food sites along the A26 and M2 all need safe access for early shifts. Sitting inland in mid-Antrim, it sees noticeably more frost nights than Belfast or the coast.
Gritting in Larne
Larne is a busy ferry port and logistics hub on the Antrim coast, where hauliers and port users need yards and approach roads treated before the early sailings. The coast stays mild, but sites inland along the A8 climb quickly onto colder ground.
